In the last days before the canopy fills with green, the Eastern redbud claims the woodland understory entirely — its magenta bloom erupting directly from the dark bark of old, twisted trunks before a single leaf appears, as if the tree were spending every reserve of winter in a single extravagant gesture. Against the flat grey light of early spring, the ancient structure of the wood becomes both scaffold and foil for the color it briefly carries.
